Immigration – Part 1. A different perspective about immigrants

I truly believe a different perspective about immigrants is required. In the last years, immigration has been part of many political campaigns, used for the sake of creating fear and separation in the masses. It has been one of the major point in the last Italian election and has been part of daily news in the US following the latest comment of President Trump. immigration is one of the most important socio economic challenges of our days. As many other important issues, the ignorance demonstrated by the masses is mainly fueled by empty propaganda promoted by the media. Refelecting a very limited and twisted perspective of a complicated reality that require immediate attention and actions.

The massage of the media and politicians is clear, immigration is bad and need to be stopped immediately.  The word “immigration” has been connected to terms as violence, economic instability, loss of job for the local population, sexual abuse, poverty and deculturalisation. While all these issues are indeed part of the western countries problems, explaining to the people that immigration is the cause for it, is just wrong and dangerous as it is untrue.

It is indeed true that there are some immigrants that are taking part in violent acts and sexual abuse, but it is a minority of individuals out of a crowd of good people. In the reality, in each group of population there is always a minority that is problematic. Letting these few reflect the all group is wrong in any cases, immigrants or not.

The general propaganda that spread fear of the new and the different is not new. It has been used by the west for hundreds of years. It has been one of the major justifications for the majority of our recent wars, has been the leading philosophy of nationalism and has been part of the core reason for the Christian crusades. It is easy to hate what one does not understand and it is even easier to ignore what one does not like to see. Which does make the problem less relevant or the hatred more justified.

For the sake of addressing the subject of immigration fairly and seriously, there is a few points that are important to establish. We all know these points, but like to forget or ignore them:

  • Immigrants are people just like you. They are humans, with feelings, families, hopes and dreams.
  • The definition of immigration just refer to a specific person which used to live somewhere else.
  • The classification of a person as immigrant is based on political agreement, borders and the laws of the period. (in Europe, an Italian moving to Germany used to be called an immigrant before the creation of the European union. A Canadian moving to the US is not considered an immigrant. A person moving from New York to LA will not be consider an immigrant while a Mexican will).
  • These people who decide to migrate are in the majority of the cases, motivated people that wants to work and create themselves and their families a better life.
  • The reason for immigration in many cases, is based on a reality of war and starvation in the country of origin.

In my next post, I will talk specifically about immigration from Africa and the need of western  countries to bring immigrant for the sake of their survival. For now it is important to remember, Immigration is a topic attached to fear and hate, only due to ignorance and twisted propaganda. Open your mind to the reality around you before choosing to hate and fear what you don’t understand. It will make your life better and the world a better place.

Change is possible- It is a matter of how we decide to see the world.

In recent conversations I had with people around the world, regarding my latest posts on education and economy, I encounter a lot of reactions that express frustration and lack of belief regarding a possible change. Many people correctly pointed out, that the system of our days brings individuals to feels invisible, that the poor by themselves do not have the power required in front of the rich and that the system is so strong an rooted in our society, that talking about the creation of a real change is not realistic.

I notices, that the majority of the people that have those opinion are expressing themselves with for fear and hatred. They are frustrated, concern about the general growing discrimination and are tired of fighting fights they find unwinnable. Unfortunately, I understand them completely.

The reality we are living in, does not look very bright for the masses. The rich get richer while the poor stay the same, the educational system is degrading as the teachers do not have the tools and support needed to make a better job, the income of the majority of the people do not allow them to live distantly while the taxes and the cooperation’s profit rise, our governments are do busy in promoting their self interest that they do not have the time male take case of their citizens and racism is growing as people become lost and afraid in their own existence.

The reality we are living in these days is complicated. A realistic approach can very easily bring people to despair and pessimism. It is true, something is very wrong in the way we are living today. From the other side, looking back on the history of our kind, in many cases we had to arrive to a certain extreme before we manage to get up and create a real change that actually counts.

To be honest, I find that it is not our government that is maintaining our suffering (even if it true they are helping), it is our mentality and the way we choose to see life and the action we take every day. It is true that the educational system of our days is depressive, that the media is pushing on us propaganda’s of fear and separation and that the economical system we are taking part of is not helping us become wealthier neither happier. But it is us, each one of us individually, that decide to wake up every day and see the life in the way we do.
We are led by a philosophy based on values of fear and separation, which will inevitably create a general feeling of terror and misery. we are busy looking and searching what is wrong and different, instead of parsing and reinforcing what we have in common and what make us better. We are busy, constantly concentrating on out past with frustration, fear and anger. Instead of looking up to our future with hope, self determination and wish for a better world. As I wrote in a different post, it is not how many time we felt that matter, it is how fast and motivated we get up.

The idea of separating the masses for the sake of control exists for thousands of years. It is not longer relevant in an era in which we develop the capacity to communicated, share and see each other world wide. It is time to group and help each other! Lets concentrate in grouping ourselves with people we like and find things in common with. instead of being busy avoiding the people we dislike and feel threaten by. It is by being an active part of our society that we will able to start a change. Hate and fear is weakening us and teaching us how to be alone in a dark corner of despair.

We are better than what they teach us, and more powerful than what they would like us to believe. Searching our similarities is the key for real and meaningful relationship. The path is hard and full of people that are to tired and weak to understand we can create a better world. Only by waking up every morning and giving a personal example, ignorance will get the courage needed to wish to learn and change.

How do you feel it in your life, are you tired of being afraid and angry? Please share with me your opinion.
